Our members - New Zealanders with health risks - are at the heart of our work. We serve our members and the wider public interest, we engage with a wide range of health professionals including GPs (the professional gatekeepers to our service), emergency and other Health Providers & Health Professionals, including hospitals and Government Agencies. We seek to partner and engage with like minded agencies, professional societies, businesses, NGOs and the wider community, to extend and improve our services for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
Since 1956, MedicAlert Foundation has provided New Zealand’s most recognised, clinically validated and trusted national medical alerting service system. Our highly recognisable brand, worn on tens of thousands of bracelets, supported by connected Health IT systems, have saved lives through its service of immediate access to personal, clinically validated, medically actionable information by emergency responders and medical professionals.
We are international in our reach, linked to MedicAlert branches in many countries. Our services have been independently assessed by PWC to save New Zealand $56 million annually through public and private health systems prevention of harm and reduced medical costs. Our services also protect and enhance the work of health professionals and can improve health consumer confidence in the health system, when used in a timely manner. MedicAlert® Foundation NZ was established by the Lions Club in Upper Hutt by Lion Club President W F Downs.
MedicAlert® Foundation NZ gained popularity and has nearly 4500 members
Established as a Non Profit Incorporated Society administered by a volunteer Medical Advisory Board, management board and seven employees. The first executive director was Seymour Young.
24/7 Emergency Hotline Service was established and is maintained by Wellington Free Ambulance.

The objects of the Society are those charitable objects and purposes which are recognised by New Zealand law as being charitable, including:

To provide indicia to persons experiencing a medical problem, disability, syndrome, or some other medical risk that identifies that problem, disability, syndrome or risk to Healthcare Providers, Health Practitioners, Emergency Service Providers, and other persons who administer emergency services, search and rescue, first aid or medical treatment’. The indicia may also include data that provides access to supporting information sources;
To educate the wider public that those who have medical problems such as (but not limited to) diabetes, epilepsy, particular blood type or analogous problems which should be recognised in a mishap, emergency or disaster, should employ indicia bearing data relative to such medical problems or as orthopaedic devices to indicate such problems.
To educate the wider public, including workplace personnel, that increasing population travel, aging, and/ or human error makes it especially necessary that persons with medical problems which should be recognized in an emergency should act to protect themselves by taking steps to make data with respect to such problems instantly available in an emergency, natural utilised to help protect a person requiring assistance;
To encourage Healthcare Providers, Health Practitioners, members of law enforcement agencies and others, when administering first aid, public safety and welfare, emergency identification, search and rescue and/ or medical treatment, to correctly utilise and promote the use by people with medical problems o f indicia bearing emergency medical data with supporting services, to enable access to wider personal demographic, support and health information, to protect against inadvertent and improper care treatment support and dispensing or administering of medication(s), which may result in avoidable harm, impact the indicia bearers health, welfare, safety, future quality of life, or be in breach of their legal rights.
To acquire, store, disclose and maintain personal and health information of members and/ or Consumers (collectively Consumers) and to provide healthcare Providers, Health Practitioners and others providing emergency services and or administering medical treatment to such Consumers with appropriate access to such information by any means, media, or format in the best interests of the Consumer.
To create, develop, install, and use software to provide reasonably priced information technology (IT) services, for the benefit of members and/ or the wider public benefit, including (but not limited to) health providers, emergency services, civil defence, government, individuals and/or other community organisations.
To create, develop, install, and use Software to provide reasonably priced information technology services for the benefit of members and/ or the wider public benefit, including (but not limited to) Health Providers, Emergency Services, Civil Defence, Government, Individuals and/ or other community organisations;
To do any act or thing incidental or conducive to the attainment of any of the above objects including, without limitation, making grants.
